Fedi Launches World’s First Community Superapp

Fedi

The World Is Ready for Fedi.

On Tuesday August 6, at a thirty-minute virtual event watched around the globe, Fedi launched the first full release of the Community Superapp—and with it the next, most crucial phase of Empowering Communities Everywhere.

The Fedi team (and community) of engineers and designers rolled out a simple, powerful, and secure Superapp that provides an easy and safe way to communicate; a place to save and manage your money; and a platform that can be adapted to meet your community’s unique needs. One place, for everything you need to take control of your digital life, available for download now.

Those who missed the launch event can view the video here. During the approximately 30-minute narrative piece Fedi founders, team members and partners introduce attendees to the app’s history, features, and high-priority use cases.

Origins, features, and design

During the video, cofounder Justin Moon explains federated or community custody, modelled after norms of community trust from around the world and across the ages, and details how the core asset of Fedi—the federation—adapts those concepts to the digital age and the hardest form of money available: bitcoin.

Viewers learn how federations tap into the real-world communities you are already a part of, whether family, village, friend groups, or any manner of organisation. With a few basic computers, just a handful of inexpensive smartphones, and a few clicks, any community in the world can tap into digital wallets and financial stability tools, chat, and more – with class-defining security, extensibility, and scalability features.

Fedi design lead Skyler Westby walks through the human-centered design approach taken to give everyone onboarded to Fedi the best and most intuitive user experience possible. Anyone can start using Fedi with just a username and join a federation with a simple QR code: Two simple steps that can be life-changing for disempowered and unbanked people around the world. Skyler also discusses levelled-up features like Offline Payments—allowing payments inside a federation, without an internet connection—and Stable Balances–allowing users to buy and hold bitcoin at a stabilised peg that dramatically reduces volatility.

Marketing and Community lead Renata Rodrigues talks about the Fedi Order, tech wizards embedding in local communities around the world, who speak the local language and understand the culture of their corner of the Global South, and who will help seed federations and smooth onboarding from the ground up.

Use cases: a superapp for the community good

The video also features multiple partners from pilot programs and collaborations Fedi has undertaken, real-world use cases from some of the communities where we are already operating, highlighting the ways that Fedi is helping local populations and humanitarian organisations solve the real problems they face every day, while achieving their highest aspirations.

Viewers meet Henrique and André from F.R.E.E. Madeira and learn how Fedi can become part of their toolbox for accelerating bitcoin adoption and onboarding bitcoin newcomers with a safe and easy-to-use app.

And Dulce Villareal from Librería de Satoshi in Mexico City, a learning hub and bitcoin education company that teaches people about freedom technology in their own language. Viewers hear about how Fedi is bringing cutting edge, low cost, and privacy enhancing features to their efforts.

Chef Lopez in Togo, talks about the agricultural microlending Kisaw Project, testing Fedi as a way to create a fairer, more inclusive, and more scalable lending network to help farmers in rural Togo purchase seeds and fertilisers using bitcoin.

Also featured is El Fuego Mutaz, head of Africa for Refunite, the leading group working to reunite refugees and internally displaced persons with their families and communities. Viewers learn how Refunite are using Fedi to make financing and communication more accessible and efficient within their operations in Africa, and empowering community leaders to run projects within their communities using bitcoin.

And lastly Hermann Vivier and Luthando Ndabambi of Bitcoin Ekasi, show how Fedi is helping the organisation build bitcoin economies in South African towns, playing the role of a community bank, leveraging social capital, providing low-friction cross-border transfers, and solving for expensive internet access with offline payments.

One more thing: Fedi goes open source

The event ended with a surprise announcement.

On May the 4th, 2024, Fedi included a cryptographic hash of a PDF memo in the bitcoin Blockchain. It announces the beginning of a process for going open-source by transitioning to a Business Source License for our software.

The announcement marks the company’s commitment to using freedom technologies to make Fedi itself a freedom technology. Click here for more information.

#ReadyForFedi

The launch event is just the beginning. In the coming weeks and months, Fedi will be highlighting additional use cases and partnerships for the Community Superapp, while lifting up more of our wonderful humanitarian organisational partners.

Throughout it all the company will highlight the intrinsic connection between Fedi and the Global South communities it was designed and built for, and its ability to give people social and financial tools that were previously beyond their reach.

Committed to freedom, security, accessibility, extensibility, and the social good, Fedi is now fully embarked on its mission to help millions, even billions, level-up by joining the power of freedom technologies to the oldest and most fundamental of all human technologies: community.

The world, at last, is ready for Fedi.
